Quick answer: the imported Toyota Vitz (1.0 1KR-FE and 1.3 1NR-FE) and the Aqua hybrid (1.5 1NZ-FXE) all take 0W-20 fully synthetic, API SN or SP, ILSAC GF-5 or newer. Quantity with a filter: about 3.1 litres for the Vitz 1.0, 3.4 litres for the Vitz 1.3, and 3.7 litres for the Aqua. Change every 5,000 km or 6 months. Nothing thicker, especially in the Aqua.
Why the Aqua cannot take thick oil
A hybrid engine starts and stops dozens of times an hour in traffic, and it does so with the oil cold more often than a normal car. 0W-20 flows in the first second; a 10W-40 does not, and every one of those restarts wears the cam. The hybrid also runs the engine at a low, steady load where a thick oil costs fuel economy you bought the car for. A Lahore Aqua on the wrong oil typically loses 2 to 3 km per litre.
What we’d put in it
- Best value: GP 0W-20 fully synthetic 3L, Rs 6,399, API SP. Two packs cover an Aqua with plenty over.
- Japanese-formulated: TOTACHI Eco Ultra 0W-20 4L, Rs 12,399, made for exactly these engines.
- Genuine: Toyota Genuine 0W-20 SP/GF-6A 4L, Rs 14,999, or Mobil Super All-In-One 0W-20 3.5L, Rs 8,930.
Filter: the small Toyota filter for the Vitz and Aqua is on our filter shelf. Coolant on an import is usually the original Japanese fill; replace it once with Toyota Super Long Life Coolant pink, Rs 6,499 for 4L, then every 5 years.
Interval: Toyota Japan says 15,000 km. In Lahore heat and dust we say 5,000 km. The oil is Rs 6,400; the hybrid engine is not.
