Quick answer: API SQ is a newer gasoline-engine oil category than API SP. Choose an oil that meets your vehicle’s required viscosity and performance specification; a newer API letter does not make every bottle suitable for every engine. Check the full product label and any manufacturer approval required.
What changed with API SQ?
API’s Motor Oil Guide dates SQ to March 2025. It describes protection against low-speed pre-ignition with fresh and aged oil, along with other engine-protection requirements. API SP was introduced in May 2020. These are test-based performance categories, not a promise of a particular fuel saving or drain interval in your own car.
Does backwards compatibility mean any SQ oil will work?
API explains that later gasoline service categories include the performance properties of earlier categories. The selected oil still needs the right viscosity and other specifications for the engine. Do not replace a specified viscosity with another simply to buy an SQ-labelled product.
How are API and ILSAC related?
API’s guide links SQ with Resource Conserving to ILSAC GF-7A. Read the exact classification: not every bottle carrying SQ makes every ILSAC or manufacturer claim. Confirm all required marks instead of treating SQ, GF-7A and GF-7B as interchangeable labels.
What should I compare at the shop?
- Viscosity: does the exact grade meet the vehicle requirement?
- Performance: does the actual label meet the required API, ILSAC, ACEA or manufacturer specification?
- Identity: check brand, series, pack size and product trace information.
- Price: compare the same pack and specification, using current listings.
Is API SP automatically unsuitable now?
A newer category does not by itself change the service requirement printed for your vehicle. Follow the applicable manufacturer specification. Product licensing, product availability and suitability for a particular vehicle are separate questions.
Should I pay more for SQ?
First find bottles that meet the complete requirement. Compare the exact products, current prices and available proof of identity. This guide does not assign one grade to all turbo cars, classify every older car as needing mineral oil, or estimate a fixed saving without actual product data.
